Michael Johnson had hoped to repeat the double he had achieved in Atlanta but had crashed out injured in the 200m US trials final. By the time of the Sydney Olympics he had recovered to win his second gold medal and would also be a part of the 4x400m relay victory (the USA would lose this gold later).
