1997 was nearly a year to forget for Michael Johnson. In a 400m race in Paris he had lost for the first time since April 1989. At the Athens World Championships he was almost eliminated in the quarter finals finishing 5th in 45.39s (3rd of the 4 fastest losers, the 4th ran 45.41s). However he still was the man to beat come the final which he won by 0.25s - the smallest winning margin of his four titles despite an attack of cramp during the race.
